Free Country #1-Prayer Permits
Welcome to "Free Country!"
The topic for the comic below was suggested to me by my long-time friend Ken Hall. We used to draw comics back in 8th grade (circa 1982 or'83), passing pages back and forth between our desks.
At any rate, he recently sent me an email--with a link to an article that tells the story below--with the heading "More Trampled Rights." That heading resonated with me--our rights ARE being trampled, little by little, but at an ever-increasing pace.
Ken suggested that I present this story in my other cartoon "Eggs Is Tense." But I'm still learning how to do comics, and it takes me a good while between concept and execution with "Eggs Is Tense," mostly because I've established it as a full-color offering but also because of my method--penciling, inking, scanning, coloring, resizing, updating website, sending it out to email list and posting it on the Prison Planet forum.
Pens
So I thought, why not do something simpler and quicker than "Eggs" for this story? That way I could drastically reduce the time between concept and execution. I also thought, why not make a series of it, because there are so many of these types of stories every day that I'd never want for material.
And so "Free Country" was born--black and white, pen and ink, fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants layout, hand lettering with my dreadful penmanship, etc. Those are my general rules--at least for now. I want to read a story, type up a quick script, brainstorm about images (if not immediately suggested by the story), and then put pen to paper. Just crank it out and don't fuss about it--it's not going to be perfect, but then again, that's impossible, so why worry about it. Scan and blog.
Hopefully these will take a lot less time than "Eggs" but still be of sufficient quality (not that "Eggs" is going to win any Eisner awards).
Also, I want to learn pen and ink style, and there's no better way to do that than to just jump in. So, now that I've ruined it for you--but not really--here's "Free Country" #1, based on the facts in this story (thanks for the idea, Ken):
